Dr. Huyen Bui is an assistant research professor at the CBE with expertise in molecular biology, genetics and bioinformatics. Specifically, she is studying the algal microbiome with the aim of improving algal cultivation for biofuel production.

She was born and raised in Vietnam. She came to the US in 2006 to pursue a PhD in molecular biology at the University of Utah. Huyen’s previous research experience includes postdoc trainings at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and University of Utah, where she used genetics and genomics approaches to understand plant development and plant–herbivore interactions. In her current role, Huyen is exploring the microbial community associated with algal culture and develop a molecular toolkit to improve algal biofuel production. When not working in the lab, Huyen enjoys gardening, baking, and hiking.

Huyen has mentored more than a dozen undergraduate and high school students, including one who became a finalist a prestigious scholar competition and two who went on to pursue PhD degrees.
